Joe Tippman’s Transition to Right Guard
In Foxborough, Massachusetts, Joe Tippman reflects that it’s been around nine weeks since he last kicked a football. His transition happened after Aliyah Berra-Tucker tore her bicep in practice, leaving the Jets without him for the season. Tippman shifted from center to right guard and has maintained that role throughout the season.
During a recent game, the Jets secured a 27-20 victory against the Browns. Tippman made a significant contribution by executing a crucial block on a screen pass that allowed Breece Hall to score on a 42-yard touchdown. He later played a vital role in the final drive by clearing a Browns defender to help secure a first down.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn praised Tippman’s change in position, describing it as “selfless.” Glenn expressed his admiration, stating, “I love that player. He’s been a tremendous help to us. He’s taken on this role as our guard and is really putting in the work.”
This raises the question: will Tippman revert to center next season or continue at guard? When asked, Tippman simply replied, “Whatever they ask me to do. Honestly, at this point, I don’t mind which position I’m playing. I just enjoy being on the field and competing on the O-line.”
Interestingly, he hasn’t practiced snapping the ball at all this season; he’s been fully focused on adjusting to his new role. “I wanted to give it my all,” he commented. “I didn’t want to spend the season thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just a guard this year,’ and anticipating a return to center.” He’s uncertain about his future position but is genuinely committed to excelling at guard.
Over time, Tippman notes that he has become more comfortable at guard and can always step back into center if the need arises. He remarked, “I’m always available. I won’t forget how to snap the ball, but if I’m playing guard, I want to fully immerse myself in that role. If they need me in any situation, I’m confident I can handle it.”
In other news, Jets kick returner Kene Nwangwu earned the title of AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kickoff for a touchdown in Sunday’s game against the Browns.
However, wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) and cornerback Azaleye Thomas (concussion) have been officially ruled out for Thursday’s game. Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips (foot), defensive end Will McDonald (quad), defensive end Brayden McGregor (shoulder), running back Khalil Herbert (groin), and guard Xavier Newman (ankle) are considered questionable. Additionally, the Patriots have ruled out wide receiver Kayshon Boutte (hamstring), tight end Austin Hooper (concussion), linebacker Christian Ellis (hip), and running back LaMondre Stephenson (toe).
