Jim Furyk Chosen as 2027 Ryder Cup Captain

HOUSTON — Jim Furyk is set to return as captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland, according to sources familiar with the situation. This move comes as the U.S. national team aims to rebuild its reputation against European teams that it has historically dominated.

Furyk will be the fourth U.S. captain to take on a second term since the Ryder Cup’s modern era began in 1979, when continental Europe joined the competition.

His selection follows the removal of Tiger Woods, who was arrested on March 27 for suspected drunk driving. Sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed that the decision was made behind the scenes as the PGA of America had yet to make an official announcement.

Furyk, when approached for a comment via text, did not respond.

In a statement on Friday, the PGA of America hinted at an upcoming announcement regarding the 2027 captaincy: “We look forward to sharing details regarding the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup captain announcement in the coming days.”

Furyk previously captained the team during the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, where the European team emerged victorious with a score of 17 1/2-10 1/2. That event was marked by a win-loss record of 2-10-0 for the four U.S. captains and notable tensions between Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, particularly regarding their pairing.

Despite the earlier challenges, Furyk successfully led the U.S. team to victory during the 2024 Presidents Cup and served as a trusted advisor to Keegan Bradley in the last Ryder Cup.

In the previous Ryder Cup, Europe built an impressive seven-point lead after two days at Bethpage Black and secured their second consecutive victory under captain Luke Donald, who will be returning for a third time in Ireland.

After initially waiting until summer 2024 for Woods to express interest in the captaincy, the PGA surprised many by selecting Bradley for the 2025 event.

Woods is expected to make a decision regarding the captaincy by the end of March, but if he chooses not to, the PGA plans to prepare alternative candidates for the Ryder Cup committee.

It’s worth noting the circumstances surrounding Woods’ arrest: his SUV got stuck under a trailer attached to a pickup truck, leading to his brief incarceration after authorities determined he was impaired.

Just four days post-arrest, Woods informed the PGA he would step back from captaincy, citing a need for treatment and a focus on his health.

Other American captains holding the position twice since 1979 include Davis Love III, Tom Watson, and Jack Nicklaus.

Furyk faces the challenge of capturing the Ryder Cup away from home—an endeavor that hasn’t been accomplished by an American since 1993.

The U.S. team celebrated a significant victory at Hazeltine in 2016, but faltered at Le Golf National, where they led at one point but ultimately lost the subsequent sessions.

Woods, who recently won the Tour Championship, will still be remembered for his performance, which left him at 0-4 in the Ryder Cup, alongside Phil Mickelson at 0-2 and Bryson DeChambeau, who went 0-3 despite earlier successes in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Europe continues to solidify its dominance, winning 11 of the last 15 Ryder Cup events since 1995. Donald aims to make history as the first captain to achieve three consecutive wins at Adare Manor in September 2027.
