Federal Judge Accused of Misconduct in Trump Case

A federal judge, Kathleen Williams, appointed by former President Barack Obama, is facing accusations of “misconduct” related to a case involving President Donald Trump.

Jim Jordan, the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who is a Republican from Ohio, has called for an investigation into Judge Williams after she sanctioned Trump’s legal team in connection with their lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In a letter addressed to the Judicial Conference of the United States, Jordan alleged that there is evidence indicating that Judge Williams abused her judicial authority and violated key principles of judicial impartiality. He criticized her for issuing a peculiar and unsupported order to impose sanctions right after the plaintiffs had voluntarily dismissed their case.

This letter was also supported by Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, who chairs the subcommittee on courts.

Background on the Lawsuit

In early 2026, Trump, along with his adult sons Eric and Donald Jr., as well as the Trump Organization, took legal action against the IRS, seeking $10 billion in damages following a contractor’s leak of Trump’s tax returns to the media. The contractor, Charles Littlejohn, received a five-year prison sentence for his actions.

Though Trump initiated the lawsuit in a personal capacity, he opted to dismiss it voluntarily in May. Shortly thereafter, an announcement regarding a settlement was made, which allocated $1.776 billion to a fund aimed at helping victims of what was described as “lawfare” perpetrated by the Biden administration against Trump. While Trump himself would not receive financial compensation, he was due to receive a formal apology from the federal government and would also be protected from future IRS audits.

However, Judge Williams later accused the plaintiffs of manipulating the court system to procure this settlement and, in July, sanctioned two of Trump’s attorneys. She directed lawyer Alejandro Brito to the Florida bar for possible disciplinary action and barred lawyer Daniel Epstein from practicing under her jurisdiction for at least a year.

Concerns About Williams’ Actions

Jordan expressed suspicion regarding the timing of Williams’ sanctions, noting it came shortly after the case was voluntarily dismissed.

Additionally, he raised concerns about Williams relying on an amicus brief submitted by the left-leaning group Democracy Defenders Action, which called for the reopening of the case despite its dismissal and accused both parties of engaging in fraud over the settlement.

Jordan and Issa noted in their letter that Williams’ July 13 order came after the plaintiffs had filed a voluntary dismissal of the case, effectively ending the dispute. They argued that while Judge Williams cited the court’s inherent authority to impose sanctions, no relevant precedent supports her actions after a voluntary dismissal, especially when influenced by partisan nonparties.

They concluded by requesting a review of her conduct from the Judicial Conference, including whether the matter needs to be forwarded to the Judicial Council of the Eleventh Circuit or if further action is warranted. They expect to be informed of any steps taken by November 5, 2026, by 5:00 p.m.

Reactions from Across the Political Spectrum

Issa commented that the actions of what he referred to as “rogue federal judges” show a clear bias against President Trump and cross ethical lines. He criticized Williams for targeting Trump’s attorneys.

There have been ongoing tensions between Trump allies, especially within Congress, and federal judges this term. Republicans have labeled some judges as “activist judges,” accusing them of using their judicial power to obstruct Trump’s initiatives.

On the other hand, Democrats have supported Williams’ skepticism toward Trump’s settlement, with some bipartisan resistance encountered over the anti-weaponization fund proposal, which has since faced obstacles in other courts.
