House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is seeking clarity on Washington's sanctuary policies which may have jeopardized the safety of at least one citizen.
Jordan (r-oh) sent a letter to Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown regarding the state's immigration policy on Monday. Jordan and other Republicans on the committee accused the state of “actively obstructing federal immigration enforcement” and “targeting local law enforcement officials who adhere to federal law.”
In an announcement, Jordan stated: “During the last Congress, a former ICE official in Washington confirmed that at least one murder might have been averted if local law enforcement collaborated with ICE.”
Letter to Brown State:
Washington's Sanctuary Law shields American criminal aliens at the cost of American citizens and lawful immigrants. A 2019 report from the Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) describes the sanctuary jurisdiction as “[o]NE of the most significant barriers to public safety initiatives.” In fact, the Sanctuary policy guarantees that dangerous criminal foreigners can be sent back into American communities, rather than being detained by ICE and deported.
Alongside Representatives Tom McClintock (R-CA) and Michael Baumgartner (R-WA), Jordan’s letter requests the Washington State Attorney General to supply all documents and communications between state authorities dating from 2023 to the present, as well as information pertaining to local law enforcement agencies collaborating with federal immigration officials.
“Considering the perilous nature of the sanctuary jurisdiction and their active role in obstructing federal immigration enforcement, the committee is alarmed by Washington's actions in violating federal immigration regulations and jeopardizing public safety,” the letter articulates.
