JK Rowling Criticizes Emma Watson’s Activism
The ongoing conflict between the famous author of the “Harry Potter” series and the actress from its film adaptation took a sharp turn with a harsh response from JK Rowling.
Rowling shared a post on social media noting that Watson’s financial stability allows her to avoid the consequences of her views on LGBTQ issues.
“Will she ever need a state-run rape crisis center that won’t serve all women? Will she share space with a male rapist in a female prison?” Rowling asked rhetorically.
The author acknowledged that while the actors from “Harry Potter” are entitled to their opinions, they have leveraged their connection with her to voice criticisms regarding her viewpoints on the transgender conversation.
“Years after their time on Potter, they still seem to take on the role of unofficial spokespersons for the world I created,” she remarked.
Rowling highlighted how Watson incited backlash from transgender supporters against her but then attempted to show friendship. “Emma ignited the flames only to later express concern that I found reassuring,” she said.
She continued, suggesting that Watson, who has lived a life of privilege, lacks the awareness of what it means to truly be ignorant. “She’s never had to stay at a homeless shelter or been in a mixed-sex public hospital ward,” Rowling noted. “She likely hasn’t used a public changing room since childhood. Her version of a ‘public bathroom’ has security at the door,” she elaborated.
Rowling then pointed out the irony in Watson’s recent public declarations of love and appreciation for her, implying that this shift was a response to the changing cultural narrative. “It’s almost amusing that Emma, in a recent interview, said she cares for me, but maybe she’s just adapting because my previously controversial comments are now seen as unfashionable,” Rowling observed.
She concluded with a thought on activism, suggesting that adults shouldn’t expect to feel comfortable with movements that can call for extreme actions against friends, asserting that they should still be able to express their thoughts. “Emma can publicly oppose me and share her feelings, and I believe I have that right as well,” Rowling said.
Rowling’s remarks quickly gained traction online, with over 10 million views.
The media outlet reached out to Watson for her response.
