President Joe Biden's ATF Director Steven Dettelbach submitted his resignation on December 20, 2024, with an effective date of January 18, 2025 (two days before President Donald Trump's inauguration).
The Firearms Policy Coalition posted a post to X in response to Dettelbach's resignation. said“Ishimi” [in case you missed it]: ATF Director Steve Dettelbach has tendered his resignation effective January 18th. A great start to 2025. ”
The Citizens Committee on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) also welcomed Dettelbach's pending resignation, with its chairman Alan Gottlieb saying, “This is the first person Trump will have to fire after he takes office.'' There will be one less gun lobbyist, and there will be one less gun lobbyist.” Based on government payroll. ”
CCRKBA called on President-elect Trump to appoint an ATF director who will “run the organization without politicization.”
Dettelbach has overseen the ATF, which many see as weaponized under the Biden administration. The agency has gone around Congress to unilaterally enact gun regulations, including universal background checks and new, partially completed regulations on firearms.
