Joe Burrow reveals his opinion of Patrick Mahomes ahead of rivalry showdown

Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow will rekindle their youthful rivalry on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium.

They are the young stars of the league, and while Mahomes ranks high in the NFL quarterback hierarchy thanks to three Super Bowl appearances, Burrow has a shot at making an impact.

One of the greatest college football stars to ever enter the NFL, Burrow had his best professional moment with Kansas City a few years ago, leading the Bengals to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season with a shocking 27-24 overtime win over Mahomes and the Chiefs in the AFC Championship.

Burrow won the regular season rematch the following season in Cincinnati by the same score.

But Burrow knows beating Mahomes may be tough.

The Chiefs avenged their 2021 loss with a last-minute 23-20 victory in the 2022 AFC Championship Game. The last time the two teams met in December 2023, with Burrow sidelined with a wrist injury, the Chiefs won 25-17.

Right now, Mahomes is preventing Burrow from improving his team to 1-1.

He knows what he's up against.

“Pat's one of a kind,” Burrow said, “he's really good at extending plays, moving around and trying to get open and give those guys that really understand the game more opportunities, so it's always a big challenge playing against him.”

Mahomes has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories and has already shown he can beat teams looking to make their mark, winning their most recent pennant in Week 1 with a commanding win over the Baltimore Ravens, who were looking to avenge their loss to Kansas City in January's AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes will also benefit from more rest before the game, but there are conditions.

After winning the first match of the season on Thursday, Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, enjoyed a long weekend and a rare Sunday off this season. They went to the U.S. Open in New York with Chiefs teammates Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, and watched Italy's Jannik Sinner defeat America's Taylor Fritz in the luxury section of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Mahomes had to be questioned this week about comments he made about former President Trump's wife during an interview with “Fox & Friends” after Swift publicly endorsed Vice President Harris. The Mahomes family's political leanings have grown in recent weeks, with Brittany expressing her support for Trump in the past. Brittany also revealed that the family is dealing with an infestation of black vultures that attacked their Missouri backyard this week.

Meanwhile, Burrow will be playing against the Chiefs for the first time since bleaching his hair.
