Joe Scarborough Reads Text Live From 'Very Liberal' Individual Criticizing 'Widespread' Crime in DC

Concerns About Crime in Washington, D.C.

On Tuesday, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough shared a text on air from a person described as “very liberal,” expressing worries about the rise in violent crime in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he was implementing measures to address the violent crime situation in the nation’s capital. These measures included declaring a “public safety emergency” and deploying the National Guard. The texts shared by Scarborough indicated that this individual was not entirely opposed to using the National Guard and mentioned the personal experiences of friends related to crime in the area.

Scarborough noted, “I want to read texts from someone else… We’ll call them very liberal.” The message conveyed a somewhat controversial opinion: “I’m not completely against Trump’s National Guard moves. I’ve had too many friends carjacked and shot. After a 13-year-old committed many of these crimes around 8 PM, none of us will walk more than three blocks.”

The host also reflected on his own past experiences with crime while living in the district. “Well, that sounds like the D.C. I knew when I was living just behind the Supreme Court. One of my neighbors was, you know, held up at gunpoint,” he remarked. He went on to acknowledge the palpable concern over crime: “Does this feel reminiscent of June 2020?”

Various media reports have indicated a reduction in crime, citing a 35% decrease as of 2024, though this data largely depends on local police reports and excludes certain serious crimes. For instance, Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department statistics focus on specific violent crimes, showing a decline overall.

However, the FBI reports a different story. Their broader data suggests that violent crime in the district only fell by about 10% in 2024 compared to 2018 levels. Analysis shows that homicide rates remain notably higher than pre-pandemic figures since 2020.

In addition, recently, there have been high-profile violent crime cases in Washington, including an incident involving Edward Colistine, who was seriously injured while trying to intervene in a carjacking on August 5th.
