John Mellencamp Critiques Modern Politicians

John Mellencamp recently expressed his discontent with today’s politicians, stating they’ve lost their sense of “humility” and “respect.” He remarked, “Don’t take yourself so seriously and have some humility,” sharing his thoughts on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

“That’s what frustrates me about politics now,” he added. “There’s just no humility. I don’t care what party you’re part of. It’s not about disrespect; it’s about showing mutual respect. They don’t seem to do that anymore, which is really sad.”

Reflecting on personal experiences, Mellencamp mentioned how his grandmother, who lived to be 100, often encouraged him to appreciate life’s brevity.

He recalled a moment when his grandmother told him at 99, “If you don’t stop your swearing and violent life, you won’t go to heaven.” Although he brushed it off, she insisted he needed to change his ways, adding, “You’ll find out soon enough.” This conversation has lingered in his thoughts, serving as a reminder of life’s fleeting nature.

On a lighter note, Mellencamp shared his love for his song “Life is Short,” explaining how it deeply resonates with him.

Career Reflections

When discussing his evolving perspective on his career as he ages, the 74-year-old musician mentioned an upcoming “Greatest Hits” tour. “I mean, I can hardly wrap my head around my past self who would have thought doing that was cool,” he said. “Now, being in my 70s, I see things differently.”

His thoughts were recently influenced by actor Sean Penn, who encouraged him to showcase his greatest moments. “Why not share the best parts of what you do?” Penn said, which resonated with Mellencamp.

He expressed gratitude for his life, noting, “When I step inside my house, I can hardly believe I live here. It’s incredible.” This gratitude extends to his children, too. He mentioned feeling like he’s the “only father” who doesn’t pressure his kids about work and actually supports their choices.

For instance, his son, Hud, who graduated from Duke University, is 31 and still lives on Mellencamp’s property. “If he needs anything, he’s just a call away,” he shared. “Having kids has been one of the best experiences of my life,” he added, proudly mentioning his other four adult children.

Mellencamp concluded by expressing how much joy parenting has brought him. His first child, Michelle, was born when he was quite young himself, which has undeniably shaped his perspective on family.
