John Oliver Discusses Immigration Concerns with Monica Lewinsky
During a recent podcast episode, late-night host John Oliver shared his thoughts with Monica Lewinsky about the immigration policies under President Trump, expressing that even as a U.S. citizen, these issues still deeply trouble him.
In the podcast, he reflected on the stress he experienced before obtaining citizenship in 2019, which has resurfaced as Trump ramps up deportations during his second term. “It’s hard to shake off the anxiety of those stories,” Oliver noted, recalling how he felt immense pressure even after gaining citizenship.
Oliver described a sense of ongoing tension tied to his immigration experience, one that many can relate to regardless of their status. “Even with a relatively smooth process, it was still a difficult journey,” he admitted. “I had what could be considered the best version of it, as I was working in a supportive environment, yet it was still incredibly tense.”
He then revealed that the weight of his immigration status was something he thought about daily, explaining, “It lingered in the back of my mind all the time.”
Lewinsky chimed in, sharing her perspective shaped by her own past experiences with media scrutiny. She expressed empathy for immigrants who feel hunted by authorities, saying, “I can relate, even if my experience doesn’t come close to what they endure.” She emphasized that the fear immigrants face today is palpable, making their struggles all the more real.
Oliver concluded that the immigration policy under Trump feels very personal to him, a sentiment that resonated throughout the conversation, reflecting a mixture of frustration and concern.
