President-elect Donald Trump has spent the past few days unveiling his provocative Cabinet nominations, but newly elected Senate Republican leader John Thune has said there are “nothing” on the table for the confirmation process. “All options are available,” he said.
President Trump's Cabinet nominations have sparked a number of controversies. Most notably, President Trump nominated former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the Department of Health and Human Services and former Republican Florida congressman Matt Gaetz for attorney general.
“We're going to work with him to get a team in place as soon as possible so he can implement his agenda,” Thune said. said He said in an interview on Fox News on Thursday.
“But we also will not allow Democrats to interfere or thwart the will of President Trump and the American people,” Thune said.
“All of these candidates are advised and agreed,” Thun continued. “That is the Senate's constitutional role in confirming nominations to the executive branch of government, and we take that role seriously.”
Over the weekend, President Trump called on three Republican Senate candidates to publicly support their recess appointments. Recess appointments allow the incoming Trump administration to appoint nominees to federal positions without Senate confirmation.
Otherwise, all nominations must be approved by a simple majority in the Senate. Republicans hold 53 seats, and with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance acting as the tiebreaker, each candidate can be confirmed by losing just three Republican votes.
“But we also will not allow Democrats to interfere or thwart the will of President Trump and the American people,” Thune said.
