Bipartisan Housing Bill to Be Sent to Trump
House Speaker Mike Johnson is preparing to send a bipartisan housing bill to President Donald Trump on Monday. This move comes after a previous plan for the president to sign the bill was put on hold. The hold-up happened because Trump indicated he would only sign if the Senate approved the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act, commonly known as the SAVE Act.
Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, confirmed on Sunday that the housing bill, which received significant support in both the House and Senate, is now ready for submission to the White House. He expressed optimism about advancing election law through Congress and anticipated that the housing initiatives would ultimately become law.
The housing bill, known as the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, focuses on mitigating costs for Americans. Key components include limiting large investors’ acquisition of single-family homes, initiating a pilot program for small mortgage loans under $100,000, and enhancing fairness in home appraisal processes.
In an interview with a news outlet, Johnson mentioned, “I’m going to send the bill to him on Monday, and it will become law.” He added that he hopes Trump will proudly sign the bill, emphasizing their commitment to delivering results for the American people.
Johnson also stated, “We’ve made promises to our constituents, and we are fulfilling them daily in this Congress. This bill is crucial because it increases housing availability, lowers costs, reduces regulations, and meets important market needs. The president and I have discussed these issues extensively, and he is on board with our goals.”
The bill garnered substantial support in the House, passing with a vote of 385-32 last Tuesday. Initially, Trump was set to sign it during a ceremony scheduled for the following day in Statuary Hall. However, he unexpectedly withdrew his intent and urged lawmakers to prioritize the SAVE Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration and requires a government-issued ID to vote.
