Jonathan Turley shuts down ‘dangerous’ rhetoric on Supreme Court immunity ruling

Constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley went on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” to blast President Biden, the Democratic Party and the media.,The indictment, filed Tuesday, alleges that the president “misled the public about Monday’s Supreme Court decision that effectively shields former presidents from prosecution.”

Trump immunity case: Supreme Court rules former presidents have broad protection from prosecution

Jonathan Turley: What we saw last night was an addiction to anger. People don’t want to admit it, but they love anger. And it’s always unsettling to see how anger erupts and how quickly it overtakes reason. There’s a discussion about death squads being formed and people being killed. And what really drove it home was the President’s speech at the White House. The President said Last night’s ruling was untrue and he misled the public with his opinion. Not only was it unfair to the Supreme Court, it was also unfair to the public that they were told something that was simply not true.

……

The amazing thing is, you know, we have the most successful constitution in the world, the longest-standing constitution. There’s a reason it’s still there. We’ve survived times where most countries would have crumbled to pieces, and the reason is that we have a system that’s designed to survive. And what these people ignore is that there are checks and balances on the president. The president can be impeached, he can be removed. There are federal courts that can order the president around. There are all these protections. Just because the president can’t be criminally prosecuted doesn’t mean he can’t be stopped. So this whole effort to suggest that the president is basically a government in his own right ignores the entire Constitution, but at the same time, it reflects this crisis of faith that we’re having today, and it’s being fueled by members of Congress and political leaders saying, “Oh, now we have tyranny. We have a dictatorship. Let’s have death squads.” Whoopi Goldberg is saying that gays and reporters are going to disappear. There are a lot of people saying this will be the last election. This kind of heated rhetoric is obviously pretty popular, but it’s also dangerous because there are people who believe it. They actually believe it’s true, and if so, they believe that everything they do is justified.

In a speech Monday night, Biden slammed the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States, saying the ruling means there are effectively no limits on what the president can do.

The president spoke for less than five minutes — about four minutes and 40 seconds to be exact — before turning his back to the press and walking away.

“This is a fundamentally new principle and a dangerous precedent because it would mean that the power of judicial officers, including the United States Supreme Court, would no longer be constrained by the law,” Biden said.

The Supreme Court ruled that a former president was a major Immunity from prosecution It applies to official conduct done while in office, but not to unofficial conduct.

Biden continued his speech by saying that the American people must decide whether Donald Trump’s attack on democracy on January 6 makes him “unfit” to hold public office or the nation’s highest office.

“The American people must decide whether it is acceptable for Trump to resort to violence to stay in power. Perhaps most importantly, the American people must decide whether they want to entrust the presidency to Donald Trump again. He will now be even more emboldened to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, how he wants,” Biden said.
