Phillies’ Alvarado Suspended for 80 Games
The Philadelphia Phillies faced a significant setback recently as Major League Baseball revealed that closer Jose Alvarado has been suspended for 80 games due to a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.
According to MLB, Alvarado tested positive for exogenous testosterone, a clear breach of the league’s drug policies.
In response, the Phillies expressed support for MLB’s prevention and treatment program, noting their disappointment regarding Alvarado’s violations.
If the Phillies qualify for the postseason, Alvarado will be ineligible to participate. Since joining the team from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, he has been a crucial player, notably reducing his ERA from 4.20 in 2021 to an impressive 1.74 by 2023. In 2024, he maintained a 4.09 ERA across 66 appearances.
This season, Alvarado has appeared in 20 games, achieving a 2.70 ERA with seven saves and 25 strikeouts. Earlier this month, he even gained some attention for a heartfelt Mother’s Day message he wrote to his mother.
His suspension marks a major loss for the Phillies. As they move forward, they might need to rely more on Jordan Romano, Matt Stram, and Orion Kelkering during the remainder of the season.
Currently, the Phillies sit at 27-18, holding the second spot in the National League East as of Sunday.
