Shapiro Urges Democrats to Embrace Change After Primary Results
During a recent interview about the state of the Democratic Party, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the need for Democrats to actively shape their party’s future. This came in light of New York Democratic Socialist Dalia Lisa Avila Chevalier’s victory over incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the party’s primary.
“I think what our party is experiencing is quite healthy,” Shapiro noted. “Since 1992, we haven’t really fought for our beliefs. It’s crucial that we advocate for the ideas we stand for, pushing for changes that can genuinely improve people’s lives.”
When discussing the impact of recent primary results in New York, particularly the support for what CNN’s Dana Bash characterized as “far-left, democratic socialist candidates,” Shapiro pointed out the diversity within Democratic candidates across different states. “These are races in individual districts, each with its own dynamics. Here in Pennsylvania, we’re looking at different candidates in a different legislative landscape,” he clarified.
The Pennsylvania Democratic Party acknowledged that while activist enthusiasm is essential, candidates must also prove their capability to govern effectively.
“It’s vital for those engaged in loud, performative politics to start thinking about how they will deliver real results,” Shapiro said. He further elaborated that campaign rhetoric alone won’t suffice given the economic challenges, healthcare issues, and rising living costs many voters face.
Regarding Chevalier’s win, he explained that her district’s voters made their choice, but he personally disagrees with her stances. “Her district voted for her, but I have significant differences with that particular candidate. We don’t share the same values,” he remarked.
Chevalier’s win was confirmed with nearly 86% of the votes counted; she garnered 49.4% while Espaillat received 45.9%. Her district covers areas of Upper Manhattan, including Harlem, and portions of the Bronx.
After the victory, Chevalier expressed hope that this moment could signify a shift for the community, indicating that she believes in a “new dawn” for her constituents. Her campaign focuses on issues like “abolishing ICE,” “Medicare for all,” and fighting against corporate greed.
In the wake of criticism regarding her past social media posts, Chevalier asserted that her focus remains on the future. “My opponent wants to dwell on the past. Since those tweets, I’ve grown and am prioritizing our community’s future,” she pointed out.
As a final note, Shapiro reiterated that the Democratic Party should seek candidates who can genuinely transform campaign pledges into tangible outcomes, stating, “We need to find candidates who can serve effectively and improve people’s lives.”
