Josh Shapiro and Republicans support Punxsutawney Phil following PETA's critique

Pennsylvania’s Democrats and Republicans are unexpectedly united in protecting Punxsutawney Phil from the scrutiny of animal rights activists.

Governor Josh Shapiro and GOP lawmakers are standing firm against calls from PETA to retire the beloved groundhog, especially after he forecasted on Monday that winter would linger for another six weeks.

Shapiro even took to social media, sharing a picture that humorously updated a well-known conservative symbol by swapping the usual snake for Phil the groundhog.

One Republican leader shared with Fox News Digital that PETA’s suggestion to replace Phil with a hologram is misguided.

“PETA lacks taste more than credibility here,” remarked House Minority Leader Jesse Topper, emphasizing that Phil and the Groundhog Day celebration are central to Pennsylvania’s identity and cherished traditions.

He added that Phil enjoys royal treatment in his spacious living quarters, which even have large windows for sunshine and visitors’ smiles.

“Perhaps it’s time we retire PETA’s bizarre ideas instead,” Topper concluded.

PETA, in response, expressed a desire to “give Groundhog Day some much-needed shine.” They proposed placing Phil in a sanctuary while introducing a high-tech, 3D hologram of the groundhog, complete with audio predictions at Gobbler’s Knob.

Pennsylvania’s Tourism Secretary, Anne Ryan, noted that Punxsutawney Phil brings significant attention to the state each year. “Six more weeks of winter gives us time to embrace seasonal joys like skiing, quaint towns, and winter festivals,” she mentioned, hinting at the state’s new tourism slogan, “The Great American Getaway.”

Punxsutawney Phil resides at the Jefferson County Library in Punxsutawney, along with his wife, Phyllis, and their offspring.

The groundhog’s influence extends through Pennsylvania’s historically German regions, where Groundhog Day is celebrated with communal feasts, traditional music, and weather predictions made in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect.

There’s even a 1993 film starring Bill Murray that centers around this quirky holiday.
