Trump Faces Criticism Over Proposal to Eliminate Mail-in Voting

President Donald Trump is facing backlash from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a prominent Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election, for suggesting the removal of mail-in voting. Shapiro ridiculed Trump’s idea during a press conference in Harrisburg, asserting that the president, despite his wishes, cannot alter the Constitution through an executive order.

“The Constitution grants states the authority to determine their election rules,” Shapiro emphasized. He referenced a bipartisan effort five years prior when Congress approved mail-in voting, allowing millions to participate by mail.

Shapiro defended Pennsylvania’s election integrity, stating that the state prides itself on conducting “free and fair” elections. He remarked that Trump has experienced both victories and defeats in various federal elections during his political career.

“It’s disingenuous and damaging,” Shapiro remarked, “to spread division and fear, especially among those exercising their constitutional right to vote.” He believes Trump’s executive orders are irrelevant for Pennsylvania’s elections and that mail-in voting will proceed as usual across all 67 counties.

Former Pennsylvania House Speaker Brian Cutler, a Republican, criticized Democrats and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for allegedly undermining the intentions of bipartisan post office laws established in 2019. Cutler accused them of working to strip away security measures and delaying election processes.

In a statement last Monday, Trump expressed his intent to lead a movement to abolish mail-in voting. He suggested that his proposed executive order would restore integrity to upcoming elections, asserting that Pennsylvania’s actions are just extending federal governance.
