JPMorgan Chase’s New Headquarters Offers Perks with a Catch
Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has assured employees that they’ll have access to a variety of merchandise at the newly opened 270 Park Avenue headquarters. This might help ease the sting of returning to the office five days a week.
The $3 billion skyscraper, which just opened, boasts amenities like a food hall featuring 19 cafes, art from former bank chairman David Rockefeller’s collection, and even an Irish pub.
On the flip side, some employees are expressing their discontent, particularly about the much-touted “state-of-the-art fitness centers.” An internal note informed staff this week that, unfortunately, these facilities will require a monthly membership fee. Not exactly what they expected.
The specifics on the membership costs weren’t disclosed, but employees were told that “more information will be available in the coming weeks.”
One disgruntled employee, venting on Reddit, sarcastically remarked, “It’s a real perk to be given the opportunity to spend money.” Others chimed in, with one user comparing the experience to that of heading to a high-end gym like Equinox.
Another Redditor, noting he wasn’t defending the bank, questioned the logic behind providing a free gym for over 14,000 employees, suggesting it could just lead to chaos.
A petition signed by around 1,300 employees expressed their frustration over a back-office mandate from Dimon issued last winter, showing that not everyone is pleased with this shift.
JPMorgan’s communications director, Michael Fusco, dismissed concerns raised on social media regarding the fitness center. He clarified that it was previously free but has since changed. Fusco noted, “We won’t share any details about how it will work, as everything is still fixed.”
According to a memo from the bank, the fitness center at 270 Park Avenue will offer a range of features including cardio and strength equipment, recovery tools, locker rooms, daily group exercise classes, nutrition consultations, and sessions with happiness performance coaches.
