Judge Eileen Cannon on Tuesday indefinitely postponed the trial date in the dossier case involving former President Donald Trump to May 20, 2024, making it unlikely that the hearing will take place before the November 2024 presidential election, according to filings. suggested that it would not be done.
The motion establishes a number of pretrial deadlines and hearings in pending discovery and discovery matters, adjudicates pretrial motions, and also addresses confidential information proceedings.
Given these outstanding issues, Cannon said it would be “unwise” to set a new date given the large number of issues pending.she wrote this 5 page filing:
The court also found that it would be imprudent and imprudent to finalize a trial date at this point, before the myriad of interrelated pretrial issues and remaining and future CIPA issues are resolved. The Court held that this was inconsistent with the court’s duty to fully and fairly consider pending pretrial issues. Court motions, important CIPA issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparation necessary to present this case to a jury. Accordingly, the court, consistent with defendant’s right to due process and the public interest in fairness, vacates the current May 20, 2024 trial date (and associated calendar call) and vacates the matter before the court. After resolution, it shall be reset by another instruction. and efficient administration of justice.

Former Trump administration official Kash Patel joked on Truth Social:
Jack Smith’s unconstitutional indictment of @realDonaldTrump has about as much chance of success as a @BidenHQ Hamas-orchestrated ceasefire…oh wait a minute.
Meanwhile, progressive legal analysts reacted angrily to the decision.
Trump-hating Atlantic contributor George Conway criticized Cannon as incompetent and biased.
Of course she did.

Anthony Corey, a former Obama administration official and MSNBC contributor, called the decision a “miscarriage of justice,” writing on X:
Eileen Cannon is a black-robed MAGA activist giving President Trump what he wants. It is an indefinite postponement to avoid responsibility for illegally removing and retaining some state secrets. The courts won’t save us, folks. That’s our responsibility.

But at least one Democratic lawmaker seems to acknowledge that the process during the lawsuit was inadequate.
Former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder posted on X:
Now let’s take a look at a very disturbing reality. This whole process of paper litigation is not going smoothly at all.
FOX News contributor Joe Concha said, “Eric Holder knows Jack Smith was totally incompetent here. On CNN and MSNBC, Judge Cannon (while giving Judge Marchan a bear hug) is dangerous. We see him being targeted as a person, but as Holder points out, this is all Smith’s fault.”
This is a developing story.
