Judge Rules Against Trump Administration’s Actions on Pro-Palestinian Students
A US judge has expressed opposition to the measures taken by the Trump administration against pro-Palestinian student protesters from abroad.
In a ruling by Boston’s US District Judge William Young, it was determined that President Donald Trump violated the students’ free speech rights by attempting to revoke their visas and send them back to their home countries.
“Studying in the US is a privilege that should not be compromised by the Trump administration’s actions, which endanger both foreign students and campus security.”
Youths from the US and the Department of Homeland Security alleged that the administration was targeting non-citizen students who protested against Israel, claiming it was primarily an infringement on protected political speech.
“These actions aimed to instill fear among non-citizen pro-Palestinians. The administration effectively suppresses the speech of lawful Palestinians and denies them their rights, including those of the plaintiffs in this case,” the ruling stated.
Judge Young characterized the President’s actions as a significant threat to freedom of speech, noting, “The President’s clear misunderstanding that the government cannot retaliate for speech poses a major danger to Americans’ freedom of speech. I fear that he thinks Americans are so divided that they won’t defend our Constitution’s most precious values, as long as their personal interests remain intact.”
He even drew a parallel between federal agents wearing masks and the Ku Klux Klan, stating, “Masks have historic associations that we have never tolerated in the context of armed secret police.”
In response, White House spokesperson Liz Houston said the administration plans to appeal the decision, describing it as “an outrageous ruling that jeopardizes our nation’s safety and security.”
Judge Young, who is 85 years old, was appointed by President Ronald Reagan.
