Federal Judges Allow Trump’s Appointment of Alina Haba as New Jersey Prosecutor
A panel of federal judges decided on Tuesday that Donald Trump can proceed with appointing Alina Haba as the top prosecutor in New Jersey.
Once Haba’s 120-day term ends, the court has named Desiree Leigh Grace as the interim U.S. attorney. This decision comes from the U.S. District Court led by Chief Judge Rene Marie Bamb in New Jersey.
Interestingly, most judges in the region are affiliated with the Democratic Party. According to federal law, district courts have the authority to select a U.S. attorney when the interim appointment concludes.
Haba, who had previously served as Trump’s legal counsel, was appointed as a temporary U.S. attorney in March and was made a permanent appointment effective July 1st. However, her official nomination still awaits Senate confirmation.
The New Jersey U.S. attorney’s office did not provide any comment on the situation.
Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked that the judges appear to be rushing to block Haba before the upcoming deadline. He suggested that their actions reflect a left-leaning agenda, rather than adherence to the law. Blanche criticized the judges’ behavior, claiming it undermines public confidence in the judicial system.
On social media, Attorney General Pam Bondy expressed pride in Haba, noting that she has done an excellent job in her role in New Jersey.
Blanche reiterated support for Haba, asserting that she enjoys the full confidence of both the president and the Department of Justice, highlighting her leadership qualities during her interim appointment.
Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader, urged judges to reject Haba’s appointment, pointing to a lawsuit against Democratic New Jersey Representative Lamonica McIver, who allegedly confronted federal officials near immigration facilities.
Jeffries described Haba as an unqualified “political hack” who should not continue in the role.
Previously, a panel of federal judges in New York had rejected another Trump administration pick for the interim U.S. attorney position on July 14th.
