Randle Ready to Lead New Team

LAS VEGAS — Julius Randle has noticed some parallels between his past experience with the rebuilding Nets and his early days helping the Knicks transition from lottery picks to playoff contenders. Interestingly, he believes he has grown into a better leader this time around.

Not just a better leader, though—Randle feels he’s also surrounded by a stronger team more capable of aiding this young group in their journey upward.

“There are definitely some similarities,” Randle, 31, shared. “But, you know, the situation is different. It comes with its own unique challenges. I feel ready to embrace this opportunity. It’s going to be exciting, even if it reminds me of the past.”

He added, “I’ve accumulated a lot more experience than I had back then, and I believe that really enhances my leadership skills. I think I can provide a lot more support.”

Recently, the four-team trade that included Randle and rookie Joshua Jefferson was finalized. Randle, a four-time All-Star, is making the shift from a strong Minnesota team to a Brooklyn squad that has faced two consecutive disappointing seasons.

With the Nets unable to control their pick this season, they’re opting not to take the No. 3 overall selection. This led to their acquisition of someone like Randle, who holds a $35.8 million player option for next season.

“They’re really glad to have me here,” Randle expressed. “I’m really looking forward to it. We have every reason to feel competitive in every game we play. I aim to come in, lead the way, and show everyone how to be professionals.”

He continued, “We’re here to win. That’s the straightforward goal. But beyond that, if we can provide our younger players with experience and build their confidence, that’s really what it’s all about. Bottom line, I care about winning, and I know they do too. If I can help them gain that experience, that’s fantastic.”

Back when Randle first came to New York during the 2019-20 season, he was relatively inexperienced and joined a Knicks team fresh off a dismal 17-65 record.

Fast forward two years, and that same group finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a commendable 41-31 record.

Randle, a formidable forward, emerged as one of the league’s most dependable regular-season scorers, and he eventually became central to the trade that landed Karl-Anthony Towns.

Now, he has a chance to elevate the Nets after their difficult lottery seasons, especially with rookies Mikel Brown Jr. and second-year guard Egor Demin on the roster.

His impact will be significant, whether he remains with the Nets long-term or not.

“He brings a wealth of experience from various teams and roles during critical moments,” Demin noted. “He possesses immense knowledge and seems like a solid guy.”

Last season, Randle averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and five assists with the Timberwolves, which aligns well with the Nets’ emphasis on playmakers and ball movement. His ability to distribute will complement the skills of Brown and Demin.

“I love pushing the pace, kicking the ball ahead, and opening up the floor,” Randle shared. “It’s about us building that chemistry and understanding where each player prefers the ball. Honestly, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Randle’s last playoff experience may not have been his best, marked by a rough shooting performance. After his name surfaced in trade rumors involving Giannis Antetokounmpo, some speculated he was preoccupied.

However, when asked about it on Friday, Randle maintained a positive outlook.

“It feels amazing to be here—this is a great chance,” he stated. “I already know this city well, and the situation has a lot of talented individuals.”

On the trade talks, he added, “Look, I’m in my 13th year. I’m already familiar with playing in New York. You hear rumors; it’s part of the game. I navigate that. At the end of the day, I’m playing basketball and making a living doing what I love. That’s all I really want.”
