Sam Neill, Renowned Actor, Passes Away at 78
Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor famously known for his role in “Jurassic Park,” passed away on Monday due to pneumonia, as announced by his co-stars.
Rima Te Wiata, who starred with Neill in the 2016 film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” shared that he was known to be “a very stable, peaceful, down-to-earth person.” In a newspaper interview, she recounted how Neill told reporters he wasn’t afraid of death but found it “frustrating.”
His passing follows a few years after he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but he had announced in April that he was cancer-free.
Tributes Pour In for Sam Neill
Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette, and others hailed Neill as “one of the greats” following his unexpected death. Te Wiata expressed, “It’s actually really bad. He would probably think, ‘For God’s sake, I beat cancer, and now I got pneumonia. What’s next?’
Neill’s family confirmed his death via phone, stating he died at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney, surrounded by loved ones. They noted, “Although the death was sudden and unexpected, the fact that Sam did not have cancer was a blessing.”
Well-regarded for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in the classic 1993 film “Jurassic Park,” Neill received an outpouring of tributes worldwide. Laura Dern referred to him as “my dearest lifelong friend” in a heartfelt social media post.
Dern continued, saying, “He showed me the depth of his loyalty, protection, and love, always with the driest of wits. He was a true noble gentleman.” Jeff Goldblum also shared a touching message, underscoring the lasting bond they formed while making the film.
Director Steven Spielberg expressed his affection in a statement, reflecting on their time making the “Jurassic” films together. He noted, “Sam will never be forgotten by us or by his millions of fans around the world.”
Laura Tingle, a journalist who dated Neill for several years, mentioned he had been unwell in recent weeks. She remarked, “Everyone who loved him sent good wishes, but I think it was a little too much for him to get back on his feet.” Neill had undergone extensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy, which, while it cured him of blood cancer, left his immune system compromised.
Over a career spanning decades, Neill amassed more than 150 acting credits across both film and television, earning recognition for roles in “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Piano,” and the hit series “Peaky Blinders.”
Nicole Kidman reminisced about their friendship, noting they met on the set of “Dead Calm” when they were both just starting out. She described him as “charming, kind, funny and intelligent,” recalling how he took her under his wing at a young age.
Neill was born in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, and moved to New Zealand with his family in the early 1950s. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to film, he was knighted in New Zealand in 2022.
