Justice Department Files Lawsuit Against Los Angeles for Delays in Issuing Concealed Carry Permits

The Civil Rights Division of President Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday regarding delays in the issuance of concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits.

Here’s what the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division had to say:

On March 27, 2025, the department initiated its first investigation into the Second Amendment due to multiple complaints about unfair delays from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office concerning CCW applications. After examining data from 8,000 CCW permit submissions, the department filed a lawsuit today to seek relief for law-abiding applicants.

“The Second Amendment is not a lesser right. This lawsuit is meant to address serious patterns in Los Angeles County that are unlawfully delaying citizens’ rights to bear arms,” stated Deputy Attorney General Harten K. Dillon from the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

Attorney General Pam Bondy added her perspective on the lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, claiming, “The Second Amendment safeguards essential constitutional rights for lawful citizens. Los Angeles County may disapprove of this right, but the Constitution prohibits them from infringing upon it.”

To grasp the gravity of the delays in CCW permit issuance, it’s important to note California’s stringent gun control laws. The consequences for citizens who inadvertently violate these laws can be severe, making it nearly impossible for individuals to carry firearms for self-defense without proper permission.

Essentially, law-abiding citizens depend on government approval to exercise their Second Amendment rights to self-defense through firearms.
