Justin Verlander of the Tigers Shares He Will Retire After the 2026 Season

Justin Verlander to Retire After 2026 Season

As the 2026 season approaches, baseball fans are bracing for the retirement of one of the sport’s all-time greats. Justin Verlander, the starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and a three-time Cy Young Award winner, announced his decision on Wednesday.

This season hasn’t been easy for Verlander, who has been dealing with numerous injuries. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “This season has been a challenge like never before, both physically and mentally. I’ve always thought that I would continue playing as long as I could compete at the expected level. I didn’t want to retire based on a milestone or a specific date. I was waiting for the game to tell me when it was time. Over the past few months, I’ve come to realize it’s time.”

He continued, “While I plan to dedicate the rest of this season to my team, I’ve made the decision that this will be my last. It’s fitting to conclude my career where it all started—with the Detroit Tigers, who drafted me and provided my first big opportunity.”

During the offseason, Verlander signed a one-year contract with Detroit. He spent the first 12 and a half years of his career with the Tigers before being traded to the Houston Astros, where he clinched two World Series titles and earned two more Cy Young Awards.

In his heartfelt announcement, Verlander expressed gratitude to baseball for the life lessons it has taught him. “Baseball has given me more than I ever imagined. It has instilled values like discipline and adaptability in me. I’ve been lucky to play alongside amazing teammates, great organizations, and fans who value the game,” he noted.

He thanked everyone who supported him throughout his career, particularly his wife, Kate, stating, “Thank you for being by my side through every season and rehab, during the good times and the bad. This wouldn’t have been possible without you. It’s time for the next chapter, but first, I’m eager to end this season the only way I know how.”

Verlanders’s career stats are impressive, with a total of 3,554 strikeouts, placing him eighth all-time among pitchers, and leading all currently active players. He was also named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2006.
