Kal Penn Discusses Barack Obama’s Progressivism

Actor and former White House aide Kal Penn has expressed his view that former President Barack Obama shouldn’t be labeled as “progressive” when looked at through a 2025 perspective. While working in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011, Penn defended Obama during a podcast with Hasan Minhaj, suggesting that the former president’s reluctance to identify as progressive is actually an indication of progress in politics.

“You can’t just take today’s standards and assess 2009,” Penn remarked. “Sure, from a 2025 viewpoint, Obama doesn’t seem progressive. But that’s evidence that progress has been made.” He further noted that it’s quite a privilege to reflect on past leadership with a moderate lens and highlighted that Obama’s policy accomplishments have made him a moderate by today’s definitions.

Penn argued that it was unlikely Obama could have taken a more radical approach during his presidency, considering the constraints of his position. He pointed out that even significant legislation like the Affordable Care Act was initially quite conservative and passed with minimal Democratic support, leaving people to wonder if that was sufficient progress.

Despite his defense of Obama, Penn admitted to feeling disillusioned with some aspects of the administration, particularly regarding the failure to close Guantanamo Bay. “People have valid reasons to feel disappointed or to celebrate certain achievements,” he stated, appreciating the complexity of opinions surrounding the administration’s legacy.

Obama himself has pointed fingers at the progressive faction within his party, claiming it could alienate younger voters and others. He once observed the tendency of progressives to focus on boys’ issues rather than addressing what truly benefits them. It seems that even within the realm of politics, views can be complex and sometimes contradictory.
