The Democratic National Committee (DNC) formally nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate on Friday, but she lost the support of 14 million Democrats who voted for President Joe Biden in the Democratic primary.
“I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said. Said “And I want to say that the tireless work of our delegation, state leaders and staff has been crucial in making this moment possible.”
Harris is the only candidate eligible to receive the ballot after the party finished its qualification process on Tuesday.
The swift coronation underscored how quickly Democrats moved to crown Harris, who had never won a presidential primary vote in her political career, dropped out of the 2020 race before the Iowa caucuses and did not re-enter the 2024 race until Biden endorsed her.
Speculation has it that Biden endorsed Harris to get revenge on party leaders who threatened to remove him from the election under the 25th Amendment. Biden “privately” and “repeatedly” questioned Harris’s credibility during the 2020 campaign, according to the book written by the two lawyers, Alex Burns and Jonathan Martin. Politico Head wrote in 2022.
After announcing her endorsement, party leaders and Democratic media allies quickly endorsed Harris, likely ensuring she would smoothly enter the Democratic National Convention, where the nomination process has already been completed.
