Harris discusses 2028 presidential run, urges voters to hit the polls
During a fireside chat in Detroit on Tuesday, former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed questions about a possible presidential run in 2028. She remarked that her aspirations hinge on the outcomes of the upcoming elections, suggesting that “28 won’t matter if we don’t get through 26.”
When asked directly if she was contemplating another White House campaign, Harris stated, “I have not decided if I’m going to run again,” before emphasizing the urgency of focusing on the midterm elections.
“I genuinely believe 28 won’t matter if we don’t get through 26,” she added.
Harris underscored her commitment to traveling across the country to remind voters about the significance of their voices as the 2026 elections approach. She expressed concern that focusing on future ambitions could detract from essential current tasks, saying, “When you focus on the thing out there, you trip on the thing over here.”
This discussion took place during her second event of the day in Detroit, which was moderated by Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony and Rev. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher. Before the conversation turned to the future, Anthony encouraged attendees to participate in early and mail-in voting.
Later on, there was some lightheartedness as Harris received “take your souls to the polls” merchandise during the event.
Earlier in the day, Harris had participated in a roundtable with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, where they focused on issues like Black maternal health and healthcare costs. She took that opportunity to critique former President Donald Trump’s healthcare policies while showing her support for El-Sayed.
Harris’ comments reveal her focus on the midterm elections, but she is still leaving the door open for the possibility of another presidential bid down the line. She previously ran as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after Joe Biden concluded his re-election campaign, ultimately facing defeat against Trump.
