Kamala Harris leads California governor’s race — but 50% say the former VP shouldn’t run: poll

Kamala Harris’ former vice president is the California governor’s racial runaway frontrunner. But voters are split over whether the failed 2024 Democratic presidential candidate should enter the fight.

Harris has 31% of Californians scheduled to vote in the Golden State’s June 2026 gubernatorial primary, according to Emerson College Voting/California Politics/Zahil. investigation Released on Thursday,

But half of voters believe that former vice presidents, California senators and state attorney general should not run for governor.

Harris’ closest competitors were former MP Katie Porter (D-Calif), who had only been called up for former support, and Republican Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, who had won 4% support.

Former Health and Human Services Director Xavier Beterra had recently been in the race and received 2% support.

The majority of respondents, 39%, indicated they were undecided.

Since her crushing defeat in the 2024 presidential election, Harris, 60, reportedly told her allies to keep her political options open.

The former vice president is believed to be seriously considering his run as “Governor of California.”

Harris reported last month that it is expected that Harris will make a final decision on his next move by the end of the summer.

Voters split the line on whether she should enter the race.

Half of potential voters, 50%, are no, and another 50% think it should take place between April 12 and 14, according to a survey of potential 911 voters.

“California’s 2026 Governor Primary depends on whether Harris runs or not. Other candidates like Katy Porter are conditional on whether the former vice president enters the race.”

“Harris wins 49% of the Democrats and Porter wins 13%,” Kimball added. “Without Harris in the race, Porter’s support among Democrats would rise to 21%, which would make her an early frontline in a crowded field.”

When his time at the governor’s mansion ends, most voters feel he shouldn’t start a White House bid.

In 2028, only 41% of voters said Newsom should run for president, but 59% believe it shouldn’t.
