Kamala Harris Declines 2026 California Gubernatorial Run
Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Wednesday that she will not participate in the 2026 California governor race, putting an end to the speculation surrounding her return to politics following her significant defeat to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement shared on her social media, Harris described her decision as stemming from “a deep reflection,” indicating that she won’t pursue elected office “for now.”
“At this point, my leadership and public service are not tied to an elected position. I’m looking forward to going out and listening to Americans,” she noted.
Harris previously served as California’s attorney general and later as a U.S. Senator before becoming vice president alongside President Joe Biden in 2021. Many viewed her as a potential candidate to succeed Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom.
A California donor remarked, “No one is particularly excited about the potential governor’s run of Kamala Harris.”
Harris expressed pride in serving California, deeming it her “home,” but clarified that her focus will be directed elsewhere for the time being.
This decision alters the landscape for the Democratic primary in 2026, creating opportunities for candidates like Lt. Gen. Eleni Kunarakis, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, allowing them to campaign with less disruption.
Despite bowing out of the race, her post hints that she hasn’t closed the door on political engagement. “We need to be willing to pursue change through new ways and fresh thinking. While remaining committed to the same values and principles, we shouldn’t be restricted by the same playbook,” she wrote. “My leadership and public service does not reside in an elected office.”
Although she’s stepping back from the gubernatorial race, Harris pledged to persist in advocating for “freedom, opportunity, fairness, and dignity for all.”
