Karen Bass finally takes action — but only after Trump promises to 'free' Los Angeles

Los Angeles Curfew Announcement

On Tuesday night, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew for downtown, urging individuals to avoid the area and informing police of potential arrests for violators. There would be notable exceptions, including for emergency response and medical personnel, alongside accredited media members.

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that “mass arrests have begun” shortly after the curfew went into effect.

In her remarks, Bass emphasized that the curfew was essential to ensure safety. There has been a growing sense of unrest across the city lately, prompting a diverse response from various political figures, including condemnation from former President Donald Trump.

Democrats noted the curfew was aimed at preventing “bad actors” from exploiting the ongoing turmoil, suggesting the situation had escalated due to federal actions. This perspective was criticized by White House Deputy Director Stephen Miller, who implied Bass’ rhetoric resembled that of a rebellious mob.

Despite having various opportunities to act sooner, Bass had taken her time before addressing the disruptive elements, choosing instead to focus on criticizing federal authorities.

As the situation intensified, tensions grew between the city and federal agents involved in legal operations, with Bass calling their actions “terrorism” and expressing discontent about the city’s handling of these interactions.

The announcement of the curfew coincided with a new poll highlighting public support for proactive measures in response to the riots. Many residents felt that local governments needed to take a stand as the unrest seemed to subside following increased federal involvement.

During a recent speech, Trump remarked on how Los Angeles has deteriorated over the years due to gang activity and crime, suggesting that immediate action was essential to reclaim the city’s safety and order.

There remains uncertainty about whether Trump specifically communicated with Bass regarding the current situation.

As Bass navigates her tenure, she has expressed frustration over Trump’s attempts to restore order. Recent polling has shown that many Angelenos view her negatively, and her credibility continues to present challenges following notable incidents earlier in her administration.

For instance, her response to a catastrophic fire in January was criticized after she traveled internationally, raising eyebrows about her commitment to local issues.
