Karen Bass likens ICE raids to COVID lockdowns

Impact of ICE Raids on LA’s Economy

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has drawn a parallel between the repercussions of Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions and the economic lockdowns imposed during the coronavirus pandemic in California.

While visiting small businesses in her area over the weekend, she emphasized the reliance of many local establishments on the immigrant community. This was particularly evident in her visits to several businesses in Boyle Heights, including Casa Fina and Billrieria de Don Boni, alongside Assembly Member Mark Gonzalez.

Bass noted the palpable uncertainty affecting these businesses, stating that the sight of empty streets during her visit was concerning. She expressed that the current economic challenges may be even more severe than those experienced during the height of Covid-19, as many potential customers are unable to spend money on dining out due to job losses.

During the pandemic, California’s leadership, including Bass, enforced strict measures like stay-at-home orders and school closures. In a broader political context, Bass has connected the current crises to former President Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic, suggesting it put lives at risk.

Additionally, Bass indicated that the ongoing unrest in Los Angeles was in part a result of the ICE raids, hinting that the turmoil might only cease when these operations come to an end, which suggests a complicated relationship with the protests happening in the city.
