Karen Read case: Massachusetts Trooper Michael Proctor fired from state police

The suspected chief investigator of Boston police murderer Karen Reed was fired by Massachusetts State Police.

Michael Proctor, a 12-year veteran who led the investigation into the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe, ended with a move in which his wife and sister say “unfairly exploited and scapegoats” and telling him and his detective work.

The 45-year-old Reading, a former finance expert accused of being hit by her boyfriend, O'Keefe, died on the street during the January 2022 blizzard.

Read's murder trial ended with the judges on July 1, 2024. During the superintendent's important testimony, a series of rude and indecent text messages he sent about the case was read in court, informing him of his credibility at least in the eyes of some ju-decides.

Among them he called to read “Wak Job,” “Baby,” “a – no a – with a -” and “c —.” He also wrote that she wanted to kill herself and joked about searching for nude selfies while searching for her phone. The ju-deputy could be seen shaking his head.

Proctor was suspended without pay after the trial awaited a disciplinary investigation, leading to his firing this week.

An internal review found that he inappropriately shared “sensitive or sensitive information” about his murder investigation along with “a mild-mannered text.”

“Our mission to provide the highest level of police services depends on the public's trust in our professionalism and integrity,” Massachusetts Police Colonel Jeffrey Noble said in a statement. “Like all members of this department, it is obliged to me to hold each other accountable when members compromise our mission by failing to maintain our values.”

Proctor himself refused to discuss the fiasco, but his family is increasingly speaking out as his family continues to have public interviews about her case.

Prosecutors said Karen Reed and John O'Keefe had been drinking a lot before dropping him off at the home of fellow officer Brian Albert. They claimed she hit him with her SUV before driving. Reading denied this claim. (Commentary by Karen Read)

Before the reading, he had a “unharmed record” in the words of his sister Courtney Proctor.

“In spite of the suspicious and unrelenting efforts of the Massachusetts Police to find more enthusiastic evidence against Michael Proctor in Massachusetts Police's mobile phones, computers and cruiser data, his personal phone message – [allegedly] They killed their beloved Boston police officer – everything they found,” the family said in a statement Wednesday on Fox News Digital.

“This message proves one thing, and Michael is human. He is not corrupt, not incompetent in his role as a murder detective, and certainly not ineligible to remain a Massachusetts police officer.”

Reed and O'Keefe were dating when she was accused of hitting him in a Lexus SUV and letting him die during a cold, cold Nor Easter. Prosecutors said they were drinking all night and were caught up in debate.

Prosecutors have not appointed any other suspects and have no plans to return to trial on April 1, but Reid and her defense hinted that O'Keefe was killed by fellow police officers who set up a vast plot to frame her for the crime.

“Proctor and his detectives led a meticulous, thorough investigation of integrity and despite today's fraudulent firing and the great harm and defamation that the case has inflicted on him and his family, the supervisor still believes justice will be given,” Proctor's family said.

“He is grateful for the union and the men and women of the Massachusetts Police Department for the relentless support he has, and his heart is always with the family of Officer John O'Keefe, who has endured long, unimaginable nightmares.”
