In an instant, a movement from Karl-Anthony Towns caught the eyes of fans in San Antonio.
His gesture during the decisive moment of the Knicks’ thrilling Game 4 Finals victory on Wednesday is drawing attention. It seemed like he was signaling fans courtside to assist Spurs rookie Dylan Harper with a key inbounds pass.
With just 1.2 seconds on the clock and the Knicks ahead 107-106, Towns approached Harper, who was on the left sideline close to midcourt. He gave a subtle wave towards Harper and to a couple of spectators nearby.
Responding to this, Harper shifted slightly, and the fans began to move closer to him.
When Harper eventually got the ball and prepared for what could have been the game-winning shot, he was just a couple of feet away from the fans, who were cheering excitedly.
A Twitter user, @SpursReporter, shared a video from a different angle, revealing that the orange-clad fan had closed the gap significantly, prompting questions about the referee’s actions.
“Should the NBA and its referees reconsider what happened when Towns directed fans toward Dylan Harper during that crucial inbound?” the user mused.
NBA guidelines clearly bar fans from entering the playing area or disrupting a player, especially during inbounds. Fans are required to stay in their seats.
In situations like this, security should intervene by removing those fans from the area. A second clip shared showed just how serious the breach was.
Rules don’t go in-depth about out-of-bounds plays, but interference during play is prohibited.
Yet, the referee’s options are limited in these moments since the action is right in front of fans sitting courtside.
Whether the fans impacted Harper’s performance is up for debate. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they missed a golden opportunity when Towns intercepted a pass aimed at Stephon Castle.
This tip led to a fumble and a missed shot as the Knicks staged a comeback from a 29-point deficit in the second half, taking a 3-1 lead in the series.
