Karl Rove urges Trump to avoid tariff ‘happy talk’ amid economic uncertainty

The role of longtime Republican operatives and Fox News contributor Carl has urged President Trump and his administration to avoid “happy talk” about tariffs amid uncertainty over the country's economy.

“Remember, one of the problems we had under Biden was that we talked about happy things. 'Bidenomics is at work' and people didn't believe it.

“And we had a good inflation count, but that's only a month,” he added. “We need to be careful about it and the administration, in my opinion, needs to soften its language.”

Loeb, former president Bush's top aide, pointed to consumer sentiment at the University of Michigan investigationshowed that the index was 50.8% in April.

“That's the second lowest number since 1952. The only bad number in consumer sentiment was during the Great Recession on the night of 2008. So the administration had to soften that story,” said the GOP operative.

After Trump implemented a 10% flat tariff on every item coming into the US, with a more sharp mutual obligation, financial markets have experienced a recession.

Trump suspended most of the tariffs on Wednesday. The market began to bounce back, but on the same day the president increased taxation on Chinese goods, bringing the figure to 145%. China was fired Friday morning and collected 125% tariffs on US goods flowing into the Chinese market.

Rove said the sweep tariffs have a “significant” effect on the nation, and the administration needs to get “this right.”

“Think about this. The US population is 4% of the world's population, 96% of American companies, goods and services customers are outside the US, and our economy is 27% of the world's economy. But 73% of the world's economy is there, and the purchasing power of the people who buy things.

Rove also said in Fox News that “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O'Leary was right when CNN said on Friday that China was stealing its intellectual property.

“We've never done anything about it in the last eight years, but it's just accelerating,” Rove said. “But the important thing to remember is that trade makes us richer.”
