Trump and Mayor-elect Mamdani’s Upcoming Meeting

WASHINGTON — Tensions are high in the White House ahead of President Trump’s meeting with New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani.

“Tomorrow, a communist will be in the White House,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt remarked on Thursday. “The Democrats have chosen a communist to lead the largest city in this country.”

Levitt didn’t specify what might transpire during Friday’s meeting between the two leaders. There’s speculation that Trump, who’s 79, could subject the 34-year-old Mamdani to a confrontation reminiscent of his earlier encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in February.

Still, Levitt emphasized that the president’s decision to welcome Mamdani shows his willingness to engage. “President Trump is going to meet with everyone, talk to everyone, and aim to do the right thing for the American people, whether they are in a blue state, a red state, or a blue city,” she stated.

Trump has previously labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened to withhold billions in federal funding to counteract his policies. Mamdani, a self-declared socialist, has called for initiatives like rent freezes and free public transportation, focusing on affordability for the city’s 8.5 million residents.

Following Mamdani’s election victory on November 4, Trump’s comments have fluctuated between sharp criticism and a more gracious approach. “You’ve got to respect Washington, or you won’t succeed,” he remarked in an interview, adding that he hopes for Washington’s success.

The format of the meeting remains uncertain, and it’s unclear whether the press will be allowed to attend. Some private interactions could lead to more amicable conversations. Previously, Trump met privately with New York Governor Kathy Hochul in March, where they clashed over issues like congestion pricing, but their discussions have largely remained confidential since then.

When asked about the upcoming meeting, Levitt replied cautiously, “I don’t want to speak for the president or preempt tomorrow’s meeting.” She added, “We’re working on the details for the next mayor’s visit to the Oval Office.”

It’s important to note that Mamdani does hold some leverage in this relationship; Trump’s extensive real estate interests in New York City could be influenced by Mamdani’s administration.

Levitt further noted that Trump’s hometown is evolving into a city that seems “much more left-wing than the president anticipated after living there for many years.”
