Kate Middleton receives official apology from the BBC after name mix-up on air

The BBC has issued an apology for referring to Kate Middleton simply as “Kate Middleton” during the Armistice Day broadcast, neglecting to use her official title of Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The network received several complaints about this oversight, particularly as it echoed similar issues noted in U.S. broadcasts around Veterans Day. In a statement, the BBC acknowledged this mistake, stating, “We mistakenly referred to Duchess Kate as Kate Middleton. This happened multiple times during several hours of live coverage, and we apologize.” They also noted that in other parts of their coverage, they did use her correct title.

A spokesperson for Duchess Kate mentioned that she had not raised any complaints over the BBC’s error.

Understanding Royal Titles

The BBC has a history of coverage involving the royal family and employs a liaison officer dedicated to this matter. As reported by various sources, Duchess Kate, alongside Prince William, was awarded several titles, including Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, following their marriage in 2011. Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, they were designated as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
