Katherine Clark Wins Massachusetts Primary
House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark emerged victorious on Tuesday, defeating two progressive challengers in Massachusetts’ deeply Democratic 5th Congressional District. The primary campaign emphasized issues surrounding Gaza and pro-Israel political contributions.
Clark secured a significant win against fellow Democrats Jonathan Paz and Tarik Samman. She first entered Congress back in 2013 through a special election and has been serving as House Democratic whip since 2022.
As the second-highest ranking Democrat, just after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Clark has played a key role in opposing Republican initiatives on spending, immigration, and healthcare. Recently, she’s been vocal in her criticism of GOP cuts to crucial programs like Head Start and Medicaid.
Facing off against a former city councilor and a young researcher from Harvard Law School, Clark maintained a substantial fundraising edge, bringing in $4.5 million compared to Paz’s $88,500 and Samman’s $43,800, based on Federal Election Commission records.
Despite receiving backing from AIPAC, the influential pro-Israel lobbying organization, Clark has voiced criticism regarding the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. Last year, she controversially described the situation as “genocide” during a public event but later clarified her remarks to avoid accusations against Israel.
In a notable vote, she supported a reduction of $3.3 billion in military aid to Israel, expressing that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s administration was not aligning with U.S. interests or values. Nevertheless, she continues to advocate for Israel’s status as a sovereign Jewish state and supports some U.S. aid for Israeli defense systems, albeit with a critical stance towards Netanyahu.
Both Samman and Paz have suggested that despite her criticisms, Clark’s acceptance of AIPAC funding raises questions about her stance.
Looking ahead, Clark is set to run unopposed in the 2024 general election. In her most recent race, she comfortably defeated Republican Caroline Colarusso with a 74% to 26% margin in 2022.
