Governor Hochul Supports Zoran Mamdani in Mayoral Race

On Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her support for Zoran Mamdani, a prominent candidate in the mayoral race, describing him as “very reasonable.” She emphasized her belief that he could fund his progressive initiatives without imposing new taxes.

During a news conference in Queens, Hochul indicated her aim to provide support for Mamdani and raise funds for key Democratic priorities, including universal child care.

When questioned about the possibility of persuading Mamdani to reconsider his plan to increase taxes on the wealthy, Hochul acknowledged their discussions. “I felt he was very reasonable, and I understand this needs to be agreed upon by the Legislature and myself,” she noted. Yet, specifics on their agreements remain unclear.

The two met at an event in Astoria, representing the area Mamdani serves as a state representative. This event marked their first public appearance since Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani last month.

On stage at the Queens Variety Boys & Girls Club, Mamdani supported Hochul as she announced a new $5 million state grant for the club’s upcoming $300 million expansion.

Following this, Mamdani shared a hug with Hochul and took a celebratory selfie before departing.

In a subsequent Q&A session, Hochul admitted the two had not yet finalized the full scope of Mamdani’s proposed $10 billion initiative. “I’ve had significant disagreements with Zoran on various topics, yet I believe he’s touched on an important point,” Hochul reflected.

Looking ahead, she anticipated “serious discussions” on policy matters post-election, aligning with her upcoming State of the Nation Address, suggesting there would be ample opportunity for dialogue.

“I’ve already invited him to discuss our priorities and where they intersect, and I find myself in agreement with quite a few of his ideas,” Hochul added.

Mamdani’s campaign includes proposals for free public transportation, municipal grocery stores, and a rent freeze on stabilized apartments. His most costly initiative is the universal child care plan, estimated to cost between $5 billion and $6 billion.

To fund these initiatives, Mamdani’s supporters have pushed for increased taxes on corporations and the very wealthy. However, he will need support from Albany, primarily from Hochul, who has committed to “no new taxes” ahead of the 2026 election.

Last week, Mamdani conceded that his tax proposals might not come to fruition and acknowledged the necessity of developing an alternative plan.

“Whether it’s through new taxes or perhaps unexpected revenue, or even savings, the key point is ensuring it’s funded,” he expressed. This marked his first admission that New York City alone cannot gather $10 billion, especially as local and state budgets face challenges and federal funding dwindles under current administration policies.

For a while, Hochul had taken her time in endorsing Democratic candidates but made it clear she was willing to collaborate with Mamdani on universal child care, an issue that resonates across the state. On Tuesday, she affirmed the “importance” of supporting children in the state, although she did not specify how this would be financed.

“Working parents are struggling significantly,” she noted, adding, “Iude understand this from my time as a mostly working parent, and beyond the search for child care, these challenges persist.”
