Maine Democrats Reveal Plan for an Open and Inclusive Method to Choose a New U.S. Senate Candidate

Maine Democrats Initiate Search for New Senate Candidate

Late Thursday night, Democrats in Maine announced they are starting a “fair and inclusive process” to select a new candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Devon Murphy Anderson, Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, shared a video just before midnight explaining how they will find a replacement for Graham Platner, who stepped back from his campaign this week due to a serious allegation.

“We’re committed to transparency, and even though it’s quite late, I’m here live at the Maine Democratic Party headquarters,” Murphy-Anderson said, noting that the candidate selection process is officially open.

“Candidates can now start actively engaging with us by filing a statement of intent and gathering signatures with our support,” she explained. “We’re emphasizing transparency, which is why you can find these candidate guidelines available for everyone to read at mainedems.org.”

“We’re working hard to develop a fair and inclusive method for choosing new U.S. Senate candidates, and we won’t leave this office until that responsibility lies with you, the people,” she asserted.

“While we’re at it, expect more updates like this from the field. To the people of Maine: Thank you for being part of this effort and demonstrating our resilience. And to the rest of the country watching: your support means a lot. Democracy is, well, it’s messy, but it’s worth fighting for,” she added.

Murphy-Anderson’s update follows a statement from the Maine Democratic Party released on Wednesday that outlined their search for a new candidate. This came after a meeting where over 100 state committee members decided to hold a nominating convention to choose a candidate.

“There is unprecedented energy and enthusiasm among Maine Democrats, fueled partly by committed volunteers and supporters inspired by Graham Platner’s campaign,” the statement noted. “We’re excited to unite to defeat Susan Collins in November while channeling this energy into selecting a new candidate.”

Reportedly, some congressional members, including Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), are supporting former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson. However, his past actions have stirred controversy, as he’s been accused of hitting a female colleague with a bottle.

The group Progressive Victory highlighted that numerous witnesses were present and that this incident appears to be an open secret in Maine politics, not just an isolated case. They aimed to share this information to prevent repeating past mistakes.
