US Military Strikes Iranian Targets Amid Tensions
The US military executed new strikes on Iranian military sites on Wednesday after President Trump announced that the ceasefire negotiated with Tehran was “over.” This development represents a significant escalation in US military response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
This operation marked the second day of US strikes, following Iran’s fire on three commercial ships in the region. Washington, in its response, accused Iran of breaching a memorandum of understanding established just weeks earlier.
US officials described Wednesday’s operation as more extensive than the previous night’s attacks, prioritizing additional military infrastructure that supports Iranian activities in the vicinity of the Strait.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated, “At the direction of the Commander-in-Chief, additional strikes against Iran were initiated to further diminish its capability to threaten navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.” They emphasized that the US holds Iran accountable for its aggressive actions against commercial ships and civilian crews in international waters.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized the airstrike as retaliation for the bombing of an Iranian ship just the day before and cautioned that if such actions continued, the US response would be even more severe.
Reports from Iranian state media indicated that explosions were reported in several coastal areas including Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. Iran’s air defense systems were reportedly activated in response to the strikes.
According to US officials, the targets included Iranian coastal radars, missile sites, and air defenses. Other sources indicated that this strike was broader and more impactful than the previous one.
Earlier, President Trump had warned of potential additional strikes later that night due to the Iranian attacks on shipping. When asked if the ceasefire was over, he stated, “I think it’s over for me,” and expressed disdain for the Iranian leadership, labeling them as “violent” and “sick.”
While speaking with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy during the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump reiterated the potential for further military action, indicating that the US would respond decisively if the attacks on ships continued.
He defended the US stance by explaining that when Iran attacks, the US response would be notably stronger. Vice President J.D. Vance echoed this sentiment, explaining that the US policy was conditional on Iran ceasing attacks on merchant vessels, with a promise of a forceful response should they persist.
In retaliation for the US strikes, Iranian officials warned of upcoming retaliation against US military positions in the region. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister claimed Trump’s assertions were not an exhibit of power but rather a sign of policy failure rooted in intimidation and aggression.
Pakistan, which played a role in negotiating the previous ceasefire, urged all parties to show restraint, cautioning that rekindling conflict does not benefit anyone.
The US military’s actions follow a previous announcement from CENTCOM detailing strikes on over 80 Iranian targets in response to the recent Iranian attacks on commercial shipping. Targets in this operation included critical Iranian military assets.
The US military’s renewed operations and reimplementation of sanctions were significant developments after Iran’s continued aggression in the strategic waterway. With Trump declaring the ceasefire as effectively null, tensions remain high, with a direct military confrontation a looming possibility unless Iran alters its course.
