Noah Lyles Faces Tension with Kenny Bednarek at US Athletics Championships

Noah Lyles competed in the 200-meter final at the US Athletics Championships, where things got a bit tense after the race with sprinter Kenny Bednarek, who finished close behind. After crossing the finish line, Lyles looked back and—perhaps in a moment of frustration—seemed to be shouting something at Bednarek.

Bednarek attempted to gesture towards Lyles, but it was clear Lyles was intense in that moment. Afterward, it appeared Lyles expressed that he was “hoping for an apology,” before they parted ways. Their interaction, while brief, hinted at simmering rivalry.

The crowd’s response was initially muted, but excitement surged when video replay captured the moment on the Jumbotron in Eugene, Oregon. This event was particularly significant given that Bednarek had clinched silver at the Paris Olympics 200m, while Lyles had garnered a bronze. Many considered the 200 meters to be Lyles’s best event, especially following his earlier victory over Bednarek at the 2024 US Olympic trials.

Lyles, who won gold in the 100 meters, aimed to establish himself as the fastest man in the world by succeeding in the 200-meter race. However, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo surprised everyone by taking the Olympic gold in Paris.

Despite being a three-time world champion, Lyles understood the stakes. He wanted to win sessions after stepping onto the track, though Bednarek had remained undefeated across the male sprinter circuit this year. A brief rivalry was evident as Lyles cast a pointed glance back at Bednarek following their race, revealing some visible irritation.

In a post-race interview, both athletes appeared to still have some unresolved tension. As they exchanged statements, the atmosphere remained charged. “You’re right,” Lyles acknowledged Bednarek, who replied, “I got a call.” Bednarek, with a hint of guardedness, indicated that there were issues to discuss, but opted not to go into detail at that moment.

With Lyles holding an automatic spot in the Tokyo competition, the pressure was on for Bednarek at Hayward Field. Both athletes are considered strong contenders as they gear up for a possible world championship title in September.
