Kent soldier stabbing: man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder | Knife crime

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbing death of a soldier in Kent.

A military spokesman said the victim, in his 40s, suffered “serious injuries” during the attack.

Police said they were called to a report of a serious assault in Surrey Port Gardens, Gillingham, at around 5.55pm on Tuesday. The victim suffered what appeared to be a stab wound and was taken by helicopter to hospital for treatment.

Kent Police said a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at 6.20pm.

Police said the road where the incident occurred was close to Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1st Royal Military Engineer College Regiment.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a soldier has been seriously injured in the attack,” a military spokesman said.

“Our hearts go out to our soldiers and their families and we ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.

“We continue to work closely with Kent Police to understand what happened and assist with their investigation.”

“Anyone who witnessed the attack or has any relevant information should contact Kent Police.”

Police said the scene has been cordoned off and there will be a police presence at the scene while inquiries continue.
