Democratic Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, has increased the pressure on Senator Mitch McConnell, urging the longtime Republican to be transparent about his undisclosed medical condition. This call comes amid rising concerns over the 84-year-old senator’s ability to fulfill his responsibilities.
In a recent post on X, Beshear connected McConnell’s need for transparency to earlier national discussions, stating, “I have publicly and privately appealed to the previous administration to address the public’s concerns about the former president’s health. I am calling on Senator McConnell to do the same and update his constituents on his health.”
He ended the post by pleading with McConnell to “stop making crazy speculations” and simply clarify what is happening with his health.
Growing calls for McConnell to reveal health status
These remarks followed a formal letter Beshear sent to McConnell on Wednesday, asking for a comprehensive update regarding his health on behalf of constituents who are “increasingly concerned” about his capability to serve in the Senate. Beshear maintained that public officials owe it to their constituents to communicate clearly regarding their ability to serve.
Recently, McConnell was found “unconscious” at home, but details about his condition remain unclear.
Absent from the Senate for three weeks, McConnell was initially hospitalized in early June due to unspecified symptoms. His office hasn’t provided specific updates or a timeline for his return. However, leaked emergency dispatch audio from a call on June 14 indicated he might have suffered a heart attack after being found unconscious.
In the wake of his hospitalization, McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who previously served as Transportation Secretary, traveled to China. Her office clarified that his condition did not necessitate her immediate return to the U.S.
Senate Majority Leaders John Thune and John Barrasso have since had discussions with McConnell, addressing Senate business and recent developments, including Supreme Court decisions and a campaign scandal.
When asked about McConnell’s health while on Air Force One, former President Donald Trump responded, “I have no idea what he’s doing.”
Nobody from the White House or McConnell’s office has yet replied to requests for comments on this situation.
