Michael Anton Plans Departure from State Department
Michael Anton, a prominent figure within the Trump-era administration and a senior official at the State Department, is set to leave his role in the fall.
A spokesperson from the State Department stated, “The secretary appreciates Michael’s willingness to leave his family and serve his country.” They also addressed rumors of tension between Anton and other administration members, asserting those claims are unfounded.
As the Director of Policy Planning at the State Department, Anton played a crucial role in drafting the administration’s national security strategy—a vital document that outlines the country’s objectives, security measures, and how to navigate emerging global challenges.
Having previously served in the first Trump administration, Anton was appointed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where he participated in technical discussions with Iran in late April amid ongoing negotiations regarding the nation’s nuclear capabilities.
His experience includes involvement with the National Security Council during Trump’s initial term, where he took part in the third round of nuclear talks with Iran, traveling to Muscat, Oman, alongside Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkov. These discussions fell apart in June following an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian nuclear site, which preceded U.S. military actions against several nuclear locations in Tehran, including the Fordow facility.
This March, Anton traveled to Riyadh with Rubio, Witkov, and security advisor Mike Waltz for initial discussions with Russian officials aimed at addressing the conflict in Ukraine.
According to a State Department representative, “In addition to his essential work on Ukraine and Iran, he led efforts to draft a groundbreaking national security strategy that reflects the president’s priorities.” They mentioned that he is still engaged in finalizing this strategy, anticipated for completion later this fall.
Anton, a former fellow at the conservative Claremont Institute, gained attention for his essay “The Flight 93 Elections,” which urged conservatives to rally behind Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Rubio expressed appreciation for Anton’s contributions, saying, “Michael is a key part of this team and is back in transition. We are grateful for his services and his continued leadership in drafting the groundbreaking national security strategy that will shape America’s foreign policy for years to come.”
News of Anton’s upcoming departure was initially reported by Politico.
