With Aaron Glenn taking over as Gang Green's newest head coach, Keyshawn Johnson has something to preach to Jets fans.
Patience.
Johnson and Glenn were teammates with the Jets in the late 1990s and later played with the Cowboys under legendary head coach Bill Parcells.
It remains to be seen whether Glenn can reach the heights that Parcells has achieved in his head coaching career, but Johnson believes the Jets' new bench boss has the tools to succeed as a leader, but success is unlikely. It may not be something that can be achieved overnight.
Jets fans are hungry for postseason play due to the longest drought in major North American sports.
But Johnson said supporters need to stand by Glenn as he builds things his way.
“I want to say this [Jets fans]got a good one. Don't mess it up. You got something good. We've got a really good one,'' Johnson told The Post's Steve Serby.
“There's no need to rush to win the Super Bowl tomorrow. The Detroit Lions built a program to get to where they are today. Buffalo built a program to where it is now. It's not going to happen overnight. .”
Glenn, a defensive back who made three Pro Bowls as a player with the Jets, was part of the change in Detroit with head coach Dan Campbell, but it wasn't all that smooth.
The Lions finished 3-13 in Campbell's first year (also Glenn's first season as defensive coordinator), then posted three straight winning seasons, including a franchise-record 15 wins this year.
Johnson believes Glenn has what it takes to make the leap from being Detroit's defensive coach to managing New York's entire football team.
It has to do with Glenn's personality.
“Of course,” said Mr. Johnson. “100 percent. We're not talking about Todd Bowles here. He's quiet. He doesn't say much. Aaron Glenn says it a lot. Aaron Glenn will chew you out. He doesn’t mind chewing people out.”
