Khamenei labels Trump a 'criminal' during violent protests in Iran

Iran’s Supreme Leader Criticizes Trump Amidst Protests

On Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, harshly criticized President Donald Trump, calling him a “criminal” and accusing the U.S. of fomenting unrest in Iran. This unrest, Khamenei noted, has turned into the most lethal protests the country has seen in decades.

As reported by Reuters, Iranian outlets quoted Khamenei asserting, “The recent anti-Iranian agitation is distinct in that the president of the United States was personally involved.” This statement continues a pattern of Iranian officials asserting that the U.S. plays a key role in destabilizing the nation, with Trump being singled out as a pivotal figure, alongside accusations directed at Israel.

The protests in Iran have gained momentum since late December, initially ignited by economic grievances but quickly morphing into widespread anti-regime demonstrations. Security forces have responded with brutal crackdowns.

Human rights organizations claim that thousands of protesters have lost their lives in the turmoil. Reports indicate that Khamenei is responsible for a severe crackdown that resulted in numerous fatalities. U.S.-based Iranian activists recently estimated the death toll at around 3,090, surpassing figures from previous protests, and evoking memories of the 1979 revolution.

In contrast, Iranian opposition leader Reza Pahlavi claimed in an interview that at least 12,000 individuals have been killed. While Trump has shown support for the protesters and discussed potential regime change, some Republican lawmakers have urged military action against Iran.

On Tuesday, Trump indicated that he had halted talks with Iranian officials, stating there would be no engagement until the regime ceases its attacks on protesters. He also encouraged Iranians to “take over” their country.

Responding to inquiries about his influence on Arab and Israeli leaders regarding actions against Iran, Trump mentioned he played a direct role in discussions, especially concerning postponed executions. On social media, he expressed appreciation for the Iranian leadership’s cancellation of numerous planned hangings.

However, it’s unclear how Trump verified the details surrounding these executions. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt emphasized that all options are still on the table regarding Iran, reinforcing that the administration had made it clear there would be serious repercussions if the killings persisted.

The situation remains murky, particularly regarding a sermon by Ahmad Khatami, which incited chants such as “Armed hypocrites should be put to death” from prayer attendees. Khatami described the protesters as “Netanyahu’s butlers” and “Trump’s soldiers,” signaling a hardline stance against dissenters.

In a threatening tone, Khatami warned Trump and Netanyahu to expect “severe retaliation from the regime,” asserting that neither Americans nor Israelis should anticipate peace.
