Kia Motors Issues Recall for Over 6,000 Vehicles
Kia Motors is recalling more than 6,000 vehicles due to issues with seatbelts that could heighten the risk of injury during a crash.
According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this recall pertains to 6,264 2027 Kia Telluride and Kia Telluride Hybrid models. Specifically, it includes 4,367 Telluride hybrid vehicles made between March 24 and May 12, 2026, along with 1,897 gasoline-powered Telluride models produced from March 24 to May 10, 2026.
The notification explains that, in certain Kia Telluride vehicles, the driver’s seat belt emergency locking retractor (ELR) may lock unexpectedly when drivers attempt to extend the seatbelt webbing. This defect could hinder the seatbelt from being extended properly.
“The availability of occupant restraints is critical, and any failure raises the risk of injury for unbelted drivers in the event of a crash,” the notice elaborates.
The issue seems to stem from an “inappropriate vehicle sensor” linked to certain driver seat belt assemblies installed by one of Kia’s suppliers, as noted by the NHTSA. They attribute the problem to a supplier error.
No other Kia models are reported to include this faulty retractor. The NHTSA estimates that about 1% of the vehicles involved in the recall may actually have the defect.
For vehicle owners affected by this recall, Kia dealerships will replace the seat belt assemblies at no cost. Kia’s recall number is SC372.
Notices regarding ownership are anticipated to be sent out by July 31st. Vehicle identification numbers affected by the recall will be available for search on NHTSA.gov starting June 16, 2026.
