North Korea Launches Missiles from New Destroyer
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the firing of two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles from a new warship, the 5,000-ton destroyer Choe Hyon, as reported by state media on Tuesday. The launch occurred on Sunday, with the Rodong Sinmun detailing that the cruise missile traveled for over two hours, while the anti-ship missile successfully flew predetermined paths for more than 30 minutes before accurately striking its target.
An image released shows Kim alongside North Korean officials as they observed the missile launches from the warship. Kim praised the Choe Hyon’s development, which was first revealed back in April 2025, considering it a significant advance in enhancing the military’s operational capacity and first-strike potential.
State media spoke of the ship’s capabilities, stating it is equipped to carry various systems, including anti-aircraft and anti-ship weaponry, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles capable of nuclear deployment. While South Korean experts suggest the ship was likely developed with Russian assistance due to increasing military ties, there remains skepticism about its readiness for active deployment.
Following the missile test, Kim emphasized his administration’s commitment to the “unbounded expansion” of its nuclear arsenal, assigning new directives aimed at bolstering nuclear strike and rapid response abilities. Furthermore, plans were mentioned in the Rodong Sinmun for weapon systems related to additional destroyers currently under construction.
Notably, North Korea had introduced a second destroyer named Kangkong in May of the previous year; however, it suffered damage during its initial launch attempt in Chongjin and was only repaired and reintroduced in June.
State media has indicated that a third destroyer, being constructed at the Nampo shipyard, is expected to be finished by October, coinciding with the anniversary of the ruling Labor Party.
Last week, North Korea conducted further tests, reportedly showcasing a range of new weapon systems, including ballistic missiles armed with cluster bomb warheads. Meanwhile, North Korean officials have derided South Korea’s optimistic outlook for improved diplomatic relations.
