King Charles’ cancer was caught early, UK prime minister says

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Tuesday that Charles III’s cancer was detected at an early stage.

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that the 75-year-old had been diagnosed with a type of cancer and had begun treatment. The palace did not say what type of cancer the British monarch had, but noted it was unrelated to recent treatment for benign prostate disease.

“Thankfully this incident was caught early,” Mr Sunak told BBC radio.

As prime minister, Mr Sunak said he would “continue to communicate as normal”.

“He is just in our thoughts and prayers,” the prime minister said. “I think a lot of families across the country who are hearing this have had the same shock, and I know what that means to everyone. So we just have to let him in. I hope we can get through this situation as soon as possible.”

The palace said the king has suspended all royal duties on the advice of his doctors in line with his regular medical schedule, but will continue to perform his duties. Prime Minister Charles will continue to hold weekly talks with his prime minister and maintain his constitutional role as head of state.
